Program Description:

1.0 HSW/LU

The program will include an in-depth presentation about legislative and policy changes impacting architects and licensed design professionals in New York State. The presentation will review updates to the State’s Energy Code and new mandates supporting sustainable, resilient, and affordable housing. Attendees will learn about key legislation impacting professional standards, material specifications, and integration of electric transportation infrastructure, as well as new resources for net-zero carbon projects. Additionally, the session covers workforce laws affecting architects, including changes to registration, maternal care benefits, freelance contracts, and COVID-19 Sick Leave Law extensions.

Learning Objectives:

After attending the program participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the package of new affordable housing incentives and the requirements architects need to adhere to in order to achieve eligibility.
  2. Identify new workforce actions to ensure their firm is complying with all the new laws and regulations aiming to protect their employees and enhance their work-life balance. Attendees will also be able to summarize the new law and process to renew a registration with the State Education Department.
  3. Discuss the impact and importance of new laws and regulations governing advanced energy codes, building electrification, and the State’s intent to implement energy benchmarking, reduce embodied carbon in construction materials, introduce market-based emission reduction mechanisms, and create 800,000 climate-friendly homes. Attendees will also be able to plan in advance for these significant changes and evaluate their role in helping to effectuate climate goals.
  4. Synthesize pending laws and policy efforts aimed at integrating all-electric transportation with building infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions in residential buildings, the specification of sustainable building materials on State capital projects, and a new law that may increase exposure to liability through professional negligence.
  5. Predict and prepare for the major policy efforts impacting the built environment in 2025.
